Mike Pickering (pictured) is something of a legendary figure in the house scene. Around since the birth of the genre, Pickering was a long-time resident of renowned Manchester nightclub, The Hacienda, and certainly knows how to make a crowd move. Now he’s put his hand to Calvin Harris and HAIM’s recent single Prey To God, and it’s everything you might expect from someone who’s been spinning house records since before many of Calvin’s fans were even born!
Mike takes the track right back to his roots, with a funky old-school rhythm and some classic ‘90s piano riffs. HAIM’s vocals are still at the heart of the track, and if anything suit the vibe of this remix better than the original. Best of all is that oft-used but never tired organ bass, perfect to get any dancefloor grooving. It’s said that plenty of early house records would work just as well today as they did 20 years ago, and this proves the point the other way around–a modern track that would have fit perfectly into one of Mike’s sets at The Hacienda.
You can get your own copy of Prey To God now, and if you’re in the UK and want to relive The Hacienda days, Sankeys is holding a proper reunion on Apr. 5, where Pickering is on the bill alongside Graeme Park and Todd Terry.
