For those who are unfamiliar with Hyperdub (the label that brought you Burial), they specialize in foggy, ghostly productions. I’m happy to say the label’s newest release is a remix album of King Midas Sound’s Without You. They’ve commissioned a vintage collection of artists for the remix collection, including Flying Lotus, Kode9, singer Kiki Hitomi, UK dub star Mala, and many more. Each artist brings their own unique style to the table and the result is a fantastic collection of reworks that any beathead would be proud to have in their library. I only ask one thing of you–have a decent set of speakers or headphones around you before you listen to these jams!
I never pass up an opportunity to tall about Flying Lotus. FlyLo draws from his pre-Cosmogramma days to craft a minimal, yet instrumentally complicated beat in his rework of Lost. In that same vein of instrumentation, Kiki Hitomi’s revoice of Tears is the dopest thing I’ve heard in a long time. I’m in love with the deep grime prevalent in this song, and Hitomi’s lyrics sound audaciously gorgeous when placed over the beat in ghostly fashion. Finally, Mala’s interstellar rework of Earth A Kill Ya will send your mind into a far-off galaxy. Those bass frequencies and patterns are nasty, especially with the vocal sampling and well-placed pauses. If you are diggin’ these tracks like I am, be sure to get the whole album–it maintains the same level of quality in its entirety.
