I wasn’t quite sure what I was signing up for when I first snagged Max Cooper’s latest EP Mechanical Concussion, but I guess that’s part of the fun of being an EDM fan. I was vaguely familiar with the legacy of Max Cooper, having seen him remix big ticket names like Green Velvet and Hot Chip, so I figured this EP could put out some great original music, but I was not prepared for this onslaught.
Mechanical Concussion is a name to be taken literally for the purpose of this EP. Fisted is an scatter-minded techno track built for a live show. Phasers, filters and flangers (oh my!) on top of a very active beat make this tune an unorthodox dancefloor killer. If a Fist to the head is going to induce your Mechanical Concussion, the release’s second track, Ruptured is the woozy daze coming out of it. A total 180 from the first tune on the release, Ruptured proves to be uplifting, melodic, and mysteriously welcoming. The jungle-esque melody persists throughout the track, eventually growing an ensemble of accompanying layers that immerse you in the track’s atmosphere. It’s clear that Max Cooper isn’t just an artist with a gimmick; the guy is a musician with some real production chops.
