Matthew Dear traveled back in time with the help of vocal queens Tegan & Sara in his latest release, paying tribute to ’80s legends Tears for Fears with a stunning cover of their hit, Pale Shelter.
The three collaborators manage to modernize the classic jam while keeping its new wave feel, with Dear adding a captivating, groovy bassline complete with steady build-ups and percussion-filled drops. The Texas native and beat-making pro, an EDM scene local since 1999, shows his depth here with a range of tempos and a blend of high and low tones. Effortless vocals from twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin bring a fresh edginess to the track in their bold, emotive signature style.
A longtime fan of post-punk rockers Tears for Fears, Dear declared, “it was an honor to try and do the song justice.” Sounds like a mission accomplished. Take a listen on SoundCloud.
