For the past few years, UK-born Matt Samuels has been one of the many talented faces of Mark Knights’s Toolroom Records. His exquisite take on both tech and progressive house has allowed the young producer to be the head of two labels by age 23–Innovate and Sequential. His most recent track, however, is an arena-dominating house monster. I don’t know if Samuels saw a growing trend or if he just wanted to branch out, but whatever the case may be, I’m thankful for it.
The track, Pretoria, opens with a simple, catchy beat, but don’t get too comfortable, because this one’s all about the buildup. Starting at the two minute mark, Samuels weaves a seamless symphony that evolves into some serious stabbing synth chords. The result is well… huge. One of the most uplifting and energetic house tracks of the year, this is one of the few songs to rival the monsters released by Swedish House Mafia in 2010.
