This weekend the SoCal trance family became consumed by a mountain of raw dark energy delivered by the tech trance tyrant himself, Markus Schulz. Test-driving his new harder tracks, his set was a powerful show of his upcoming sophomore Dakota album project. If he plays like he did this weekend at next month’s Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, he’s going to decimate the festival.
Marking the May 21st occasion of Harold Camping’s Doomsday prediction, Schulz kicked off with the famous lines from 1994’s hit techno track Get Up by Portugal’s Underground Sound Of Lisbon. Mixing out of the sample came Markus’s killer Big Room Intro Mix he used during his A State Of Trance 500 set at Den Bosch where the veteran obliterated Europe with his spin on Wippenberg’s hit U R.
For almost eight hours, Schulz rocked the kind of proper dark tech trance exhibited on his Prague ’11 mix compilation and maintained an incredible energy throughout the night with brand new tracks including his hit collaboration with Jochen Miller Rotunda. He also dealt his latest Dakota project singles Sleepwalkers and Sinners, which plunged the room into the deepest, darkest regions of his set. With so many hours to work with, Schulz was able to grow very intimate with the crowd and played some tunes off the Do You Dream? Remixes album including the beastly remix of Away by Cosmic Gate featuring the entrancing vocals of dutch vocalist Sir Adrian.
With a vivid lack of fluff in Markus Schulz’s dark and heavy set, the evening reaffirmed the reason why LA absolutely loves the German-born Miami DJ. The event promoter Giant complemented his performance graciously with a top-tier light show boasting four laser displays. If you’d like to see his tour on video, Markus Schulz recently put out his world tour documentary on DVD titled Do You Dream?
A former break dancer himself, his latest music video for aforementioned track Sleepwalkers (watch below) features professional b-boys and MCs Grandmaster Mele & Scorpio.
