I just can’t stop posting about one of my favorite labels at the moment, Marble. I don’t know if it’s because I’m going through a techno and minimal binge, but I’m sure it has something to do with the quality of every single release coming out of that label. So, when their most recent at-bat, Surkin, released his new EP, it just wouldn’t have been polite to not check it out. Straight out of the French techno scene, his Ultra Light release has been smashing up dancefloors both in Europe and techno-attuned areas here in the States.
Ultra Light features the dirty synth collection that is Orbital Motorway and an alternative Voodoo Mix. The tracks definitely sound like they belong on Marble, characterized by their gleaming intros and unorthodox synth patterns and bass progressions. It’s got such a fresh feel to it, and doesn’t get chained down by a single, repetitive beat. The Voodoo Mix offers a darker, edgier take on the same song. Both are great, it’s just all up to personal taste. Thirdly on the EP is the title track–a soulful, piano-centered tune with a lot of style. The song is also featured on his new USA album, so be sure to check it out if you dug these tracks!
