What do you get when you mix two heavy hitters from the worlds of dubstep and reggae with some of the finest up-and-coming producers in the game? The After Hours versions of Make It Bun Dem, the much-lauded collaboration between Skrillex and Damian Marley. This collection of remixes covers an impressive amount of genres, from moombahton to garage to hardstyle to electro house.
Jump-up fans are well represented here with cuts from David Heartbreak and Culprate that share roots but travel down two very separate paths. Heartbreak’s version borrows from hardstyle to get super hype then puts the vocals in overdrive when the moombahcore kicks in, while Culprate elects for a glitchy, dubstep-infused sound that gets progressively more sinister. Brodinski goes even glitchier, throwing the vocals through an electronic blender and serving them up on a whirring plate of fidget house.
Don’t worry, trap is in the building on this release as well with Flinch’s genre-straddling take on the collaboration. OWSLA rising star Alvin Risk gets in on the fun as well, throwing a massive festival banger into the mix that had me looking over my shoulder for the impending robot army. My personal favorite comes from the leader of the bass scene in France. French Fries works the vocals into a chopped up fervor (BIG GUNS, BIG BIG GUNS) over some mean sub-bass to craft a basement-dwelling garage heater. Buy the release on Beatport.
