It’s been a great year so far for Pretty Lights, who this summer headlined the mainstage at Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas and is now touring the country for his Illumination Tour. He’s built up quite a following for taking funky, electronic bass and fusing it with soulful hip hop grooves–the perfect blend of sound for American youth culture.
With great fame and success comes the opportunity to shine the spotlight on other respectable talent, and at this party Pretty Lights shone it on his friends. He had SuperVision open up the night with some very serene beats, like Arcane of his Telescopic LP, that really set the tone for the rest of the night. Also joining the lineup came the king of “purple” music, MartyParty, who threw down some gangsta vibes with tracks like his latest collab with FreQ Nasty, Beethoven’s Filth. With a ton of hip hop fans in the audience, there was a huge appreciation for one of the most celebrated turntablists, DJ Shadow, who proudly remarked “We live in a Renaissance era of music” before proceeding to lay down some trap beats. True to his reputation, he got quite creative with his vinyl; at one point he was even scratching with drumsticks.
There was a five minute countdown before Pretty Lights, and in that time the excitement built to an almost palpable level. There were seats lining each row of people, but I can assure you no one was sitting when he stepped up to the stage and activated his mind-boggling lightshow. The vast array of colors that flew forward were the never the same for any tune in his set, which made every moment vivid and unique. Just before he closed out with I Know The Truth, there was one especially soulful song that Pretty Lights shared called We Must Go On, which he proudly announced on the mic that he produced with his girlfriend. This was definitely one of the very best shows that I have seen this year, so be sure to catch him on his Illumination Tour.
