Remember back when yo-yos started having LEDs that would light up when you threw them? Well, those toys may have gone out of style, but there’s a new light-driven hobby born out of the rave scene that is quickly sweeping the world. Yes, I’m talking about gloving; in many ways, LED gloves are the modern-day yo-yo, with today’s youth passionately honing their skills at performing lightshows.
This past weekend we had the pleasure of attending the International Gloving Championship held at the Pomona Fairplex in LA and hosted by industry leader Emazing Lights. The all-day event showcased several DJs including afterparty headliner tyDi, who all provided an excellent selection of electro ragers, dubstep bangers, and driving trance that made each gloving round thrilling. I was really impressed by the turn-out, not to mention the drug-free event really stood at odds with common misconceptions about the new artform. Everyone’s hard work and dedication was vividly clear and all the competitors really put their heart and soul into their lightshows. Much like DJs, the glovers showed off their own styles and went by nicknames. Proudly taking home the title of gloving champion was the young and impressive Thumper, who battled through twelve intense rounds of gloving to earn the IGC trophy (his final match @ 2:33 in video below).
