There are few feelings that compare to the blood rush that comes from slamming trance at higher BPMs.
Last Friday, John O’Callaghan delivered exactly that at Exchange LA, with a powerful set that exploded with fury from the club’s Funktion One surround sound system. Whereas a lot trance these days resides in the lower, more progressive range, JOC reminded the crowd of the intense euphoria you can hit when the DJ approaches 140bpm.
Having live vocals really does enhance Insomniac’s Awakening shows; for this night they had New York singer Betsie Larkin (pictured) on the mic to open for JOC with some of her greatest songs, including her popular tunes with Ferry Corsten, Not Coming Down and Made Of Love, which had had nearly everyone singing along. Later she joined JOC on stage to sing live their uplifting anthem with Gareth Emery, Save This Moment. It wouldn’t be a John O’Callaghan set without downright ruthless bangers, so he let loose plenty of 140bpm beasts like Raw Deal and his latest remix of Foolish Boy by Emma Hewitt.
