I nearly fell out of my chair when I learned that Porter Robinson and Zedd were going to be touring together; they’re both extremely talented and their reputation for throwing down some of the hardest electro sets is indisputable. Last friday at Avalon Hollywood, the powerhouse duo had fans come from all over to see them on the LA showing of their Poseidon Tour, including one girl who held up a sign saying she flew from Texas to see them. Opening for them was Nick Thayer of OWSLA, who performed a spectacular job of warming up the audience all over the genre map with his selection and mixed it all smoothly.
When Zedd and Porter assumed the throne, the crowd roared with a level of explosive excitement that would soon match the unruly energy of his set. With Zedd’s new album just out on Interscope, they served up a nice platter of his new music, including the LP’s uplifting title track, Clarity, Fall Into The Sky, and the 303-blasting instrumental Stache, which just came out with an extended version on Beatport. Throwing in a few surprises, they dropped RL Grime & Salva’s remix of Mercy, Voodoo by Jacob van Hage, and just before the drop in Slam The Door, they played a sample from Gangnam Style, which generated an enormous reaction from the room.
The most brutal portion of Porter and Zedd’s mix had to be when they got into their hard dance-inspired tunes like Shotgun and Porter’s fav, the Headhunterz remix of Spaceman by Hardwell. Right before dropping these insane bangers they trolled the dancefloor by playing the intro to Avicii’s Levels before cutting it off abruptly with a hilarious sample yelling Oh God, Please No! At this point they were showing absolutely no mercy; their rapid mixing sent everyone off the ground with every furious drop (See Video Below). Saving their euphoric anthems for last, the level of emotion in the room hit a peak when they closed out with Spectrum and Language during a dazzling confetti climax.
