Attending Fresh Anniversary this pas Saturday (4/7) made it clear to me just how dedicated the SoCal underground scene is to EDM. Once again held at the Pico River Sports Arena, the party stood as another healthy sign of how the promoter, Fresh Entertainment, has recovered from some unfortunate setbacks following the drama after EDC 2010. Fresh came back last December with Winterfresh, and in doing so reclaimed the arena. This latest anniversary celebration stood as an excellent follow-up, with hardstylers and trance enthusiasts alike bouncing in the arena, wild and rowdy moshpits in the bass area, tons of kandi and fans wearing Anjunabeats and Hard Dance Nation t-shirts, and even the gloving community showing up with their own stage courtesy of Emazing Lights!
The mix of artists was very diverse. I saw quite a few names for the first time, like Tommie Sunshine, who played a funky set with tracks like TJR’s Beatport chart topping Funky Vodka. Argentina’s Heatbeat also made an appearance and rocked the hot new banger by W&W’s, Shotgun, and their own beast, Rocker Monster. Two champions of bass that made quite an impression were Figure, who dropped the most raw and dark set of the festival, and Alvin Risk. The latter completely wrecked his audience with his remix of We Are Young by Fun, his collaboration with Tittsworth called Pendejas, and an unreleased, completely insane tune called Psychotic (see video below). Finishing off the evening and leaving smiles on everyone’s faces were none other than Hungary’s Myon & Shane 54. To add to the treat, Aruna herself came and sang live M&S54’s latest collaboration with Cosmic Gate, All Around You as well as their version of Let Go.
