The highly anticipated EP from KOAN Sound has finally arrived! The Adventures Of Mr. Fox marks the latest in glitchy, hip-hoppy, groovy electronica from the duo from across the pond. To say the EP has character is an understatement–every song packs a humongous wallop and are all unique in their own right. From hard-hitting grime to stylistic, subdued melodies, the release oozes quality. KOAN Sound has really gone out of their way to make this one a special release. Pulling from obvious influences from the likes of EDM rockstar Skrillex, and from the late jazz hip hop producer Nujabes, this EP combines modern day rave with old school swag.
KOAN Sound starts things off on a rather body-bouncing note, as the song implies. 80s Fitness isn’t exactly a song you would expect to hear at an 80s party, but boy does it get your booty moving. It’s about as fist-pumping as it is groovy, incorporating elements of funk and glitch hop into one polished product. I guarantee you this track will have Paula Abdul having another one of her crazy fits. Sly Fox takes things down a notch, but then up again. Way up. It starts off with a chill, jazzy beat but then surprises you with hard bass to the face. The song is very appropriately named, because sly is the exact word I would use to describe the stylish sounding synth and light piano. Add to that crisp basslines and you’ve got yourself a quality title track.
My favorite track on the EP has to be Introvert. If you know me, then you know I’m a fan of quality indie beats. This is about as quality as they come. As the name suggests, this song definitely has more of an at-home vibe to it, while at the same time retaining KOAN Sound’s signature grime. The guys definitely flex their musical guns on this one, with a variety of different drums and ethereal echoes. To sum it all up, the EP is a must have for fans of the duo, or fans of just good music in general. It also includes three great remixes, so there’s another incentive to pick it up right here.
