Illum Sphere, Thriller and Shed are the latest bass luminaries to try their hand at remixing Radiohead’s King Of Limbs on the fourth in an extensive series of remix EPs released on the band’s own Ticker Tape imprint. Pearson Sound, Lone, Four Tet, Jacques Greene and Caribou are just some of the artists who have already thrown their hats into the ring, and with a fifth EP featuring Blawan and Brokenchord being released, this series is shaping up to be one of the biggest stories of 2011.
Thriller’s “Houseghost” mix of Give Up The Ghost opens proceedings, the original given a hypnotic ambient house workover with Thom’s vocals sounding faded and emaciated while eerie rhythms patter away in the darkness. Next up is Illum Sphere’s Codex mix, a gaunt future bass rework of the original that, like Thriller’s offering, is all about cavernous space contrasting with taut percussion. Techno bruiser Shed steals the show with his version of Little By Little, typically unforgiving with its cyclical fragmented melodies and darkwave bass whirrings.
