Today I have a track that’s a bit of a throwback. Released in 2009, Land of the Lupes by Bassnectar takes Lupe Fiasco’s Kick, Push and turns it into a dream-like journey through the world of hip hop. This track was actually produced as somewhat of a mashup from an unreleased Bassnectar track called Stretch Reflex. He added in some synths and melodies from another unreleased track, and peppered the whole thing with Lupe Fiasco’s a cappella from Kick, Push. Here’s what Bassnectar had to say about the whole thing: “It was written as a pensive homage to the dead, the original melodics sound like a black metal song but in this version they have kind of a nice 90s Orb or FSOL feel to them…that sound will never get old for me!” Indeed this is a sound that could never get old.
Bassnectar is known for pushing the limits of dubstep and adding in elements of hip hop and rock. What a perfect song to demonstrate his versatility. I could definitely see this one drawing in crowds from outside the scene. Whether you’ve heard this track already or not, give it a listen. Kick…and push…and coooaasssst. <3
