Linchpin of the Bristol scene and general UK stalwart Julio Bashmore is back with another velvety smooth 2-tracker on Futureboogie. After gently bobbing along with the occasional release for the past few years, Bashmore has taken his career by the scruff of its neck in 2011, living up to his potential by releasing track after track of bold, slick house. He may have set the bar high with Everyone Needs a Theme Tune, his universally acclaimed EP released on PMR all the way back in January, but his latest effort Riff Wrath is certainly no slouch.
Ensnare opens proceedings with its honeyed guitar and misty-eyed soul vocals, all backed up by Bashmore’s elegantly tumbling bass rhythms. On the flip, Well Wishers drops the vox in favor of more fretwork and a heap of gorgeous, fluttering synths. The common denominator is the snare-propelled house groove that provides the foundation for most of Bashmore’s best works, be they deep house dreamscapes like on Riff Wrath or his funkier, bassier offerings such as the excellent Battle For Middle You, recently voted Resident Advisor’s third best track of 2011.
