Trance is often about the big musical riffs and huge breaks, but there’s a harder, deeper side to the genre which is very much alive and well. John Askew is flying the flag for the latter, championing the style with some crazy production on his latest release Mechanism, which appropriately is out on Mental Asylum.
Mechanism is fast, frantic and full of energy–acid lines, pounding rhythms and throbbing bass riffs make for an intense and driving journey, interspersed with the occasional vocal sample, notably the classic “Here’s Johnny”, a subtle nod the almost insane nature of the track. It’s not quite psytrance, but it retains that feeling of music you can lose yourself in: hard trance with an out-of-body feel to it–just right for those summer raves.
Mechanism is out now as a Beatport Exclusive.
