Anjunabeats legend Jaytech is returning to his “roots,” though his production style makes it difficult to work out exactly what those roots are. With nearly a decade on the scene, James Cayzer has almost forged a style of his own, with a mix of house, trance and general electronic wizardry that is hard to categorize. That said, his latest EP, Megastructure/Earthbound, is certainly a nostalgia trip for those who’ve followed his work over the years.
Opener Megastructure almost feels like something that accidentally got left off of Jaytech’s 2007 debut Everything Is OK. It’s classic Jaytech, with a smooth electro house style that is a world away from the screams and dirt of the more mainstream end of the genre. The vocal sample almost sounds like a synth, and the bloops and chord stabs have that random-yet-purposeful style that feature’s in all of James’ best works. B-side Earthbound has more of a trance feel to it, with a long break and some lush chords, but the signature Jaytech sound returns once again, this time in the shape of some ’80s-style synth arps, dancing alongside a techy and groovy bass riff.
Megastructure/Earthbound is out now on Anjunabeats as a Beatport Exclusive.
