Less than two months after debuting their first album, CHVRCHES presented fans with a bag of goodies this week with the release of The Mother We Share EP.
The five-song compilation includes remixes of the Scottish trio’s first hit single of the same name, including one by Vancouver producer and OWSLA prodigy Blood Diamonds. He keeps the track’s vocals intact while elevating the beat, giving the tune a fresh drum & bass feel. New York native Junior Sanchez appears on the EP, remixing Tether, a complex track that builds that slowly builds in tempo in the original. His version features a more progressive rhythm, putting a completely new spin on the song.
But perhaps the best part of the release is a cover of the late, great Whitney Houston’s It’s Not Right But It’s Okay. The group manages to take a ’90s classic and make it their own with a bold beat and the bright, engrossing vocals of CHVRCHES lead singer Lauren Mayberry. Amidst the heavy synth-pop, she retains the emotion and tenacity that made the Grammy-winning tune so captivating back in the day. The Queen of Pop would be proud.
