Legendary DJ and broadcaster Pete Tong has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for “services to music and broadcasting” as part of The Queen’s New Year’s Honours given here in the UK to the great and good who’ve contributed to society over the years.
Anyone who’s followed dance music for a while will be aware that the man is thoroughly deserving of such a title. A key figure in the early rise of dance music in the UK, Tong has become a household name thanks to his ongoing weekly BBC radio show, his 20-year-old Essential Mix series, gigs across the world–notably in Ibiza where he’s been a regular fixture since the club scene exploded in the late 80s–and his new show on Evolution Radio, which has seen him relocate to Los Angeles. As dance music continues to grow exponentially in the US,IMS, his major dance music conference in Ibiza, has now been joined by a sister event in LA as a healthy rival to Miami’s WMC.
This may be a man whose name is rhyming slang for things going wrong, but for Pete Tong, things just continue to go right.
