Canadians Dylan Mamid and Zach Rapp-Rovan, aka Zeds Dead, are masters of the dubstep sound. In their exclusive LessThan3 interview, find out how these two met, what influences their sound, and how they’ve become the rising stars of wobbly EDM.
Zeds Dead - Here Comes The Boom (Original Mix)
LessThan3: What is it about dubstep that has caused it to explode?
Zach: It’s completely blown up since last year. It’s still fairly underground, but it’s kind of hip if you know what I mean. It’s raw music. It’s your animal instincts.
LessThan3: Where did the name Zeds Dead< come from? Was it in any way influenced by the film Pulp Fiction?
Zach: We got our name because my name is Zack and his name is Dylan, and it’s more of a reference to our initials. We had a brainstorming session: “Zack, Dylan… Z, D, D, Z… Zed, Dead, Zeds Dead,” and it kind of just rolled off the tongue.
LessThan3: What other kinds of music do you listen to besides dubstep?
Dylan: We listened to tons of old stuff, mainly hip hop, before we got into the electronic scene. I have actually have found out that I listen to more of that stuff than anything else. I mean I love trance, I love dubstep, I love drum’n’bass, but I find myself listening to that when I’m chilling at home.
Zach: We listened to all sorts of soul, R&B, rock, and a lot of reggae. It could be anything.
LessThan3: What did you guys do before becoming what you are today? How did you meet each other?
Zach: We knew each other forever. We did a lot of collaborations with rappers; we dropped a couple of raps ourselves. We used to have a band named Mass and we had tons of beats. We did that till about a year and a half ago.
LessThan3: What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened on tour?
Dylan: We had a crazy f*cking show in Montreal. We did an encore thing and we hyped the whole crowd up. As I say, “Anyone want to hear more Zeds Dead? Let’s do this!” I look at Zack and the computers crash. And then I was like “f*ck!” in front of 800 crazy people. Our manager got on the microphone and hyped up the crowd while we restarted everything until we dropped our last track.
Zach: Yeah it’s like being left hanging on a high five or something. “You guys ready?!”…and then nothing.
LessThan3: If the world were ending in LessThan3 minutes, and you had an iPod with every song ever made on it, what would you play?
Dylan: I want to say something stupid like And I Feel Fine by R.E.M. But I would not listen to that. I would not listen to a song. I would be too busy running or scavenging for food or something like that.
LessThan3: How would you describe your sound in LessThan3 words?
Zach: Bass hungry.
