SoCal’s Jeff Montalvo, aka Seven Lions, made a big splash in the breakbeat world with the release of his debut EP on Viper & his unique remixes of some of Above & Beyond’s biggest hits. Jeff spoke with us at a show he headlined in LA about his versatile sound & where he finds inspiration.
LessThan3: Your style of bass music really stands out for its melodies and otherworldly atmosphere. Where do you draw your inspiration?
I get the textured melody style from Above & Beyond
, but for dubstep and drum’n’bass I get inspiration from bands like Opeth, Delirium, Porcupine Tree, and more rock’n’roll and metal sounds.
LessThan3: Your remix of You Got To Go on Anjunabeats was a big break for you. What’s the story behind that track?
I saw the remix contest they were having on Beatport
, but at first wasn’t even planning on entering the contest; I was just downloading the stems because I really liked Zoe Johnston’s
vocals. Later, I started producing with them but I had to work quickly because I only had two weeks to make it by the deadline. I just really put my mind to it and cranked out the tune.
LessThan3: Your Polarize EP on Viper Recordings is one of our favorite releases of the year so far. Were you working on this EP for awhile?
I spent about six months making the EP. By the time I got to Viper with it, Below Us
were already done. Over the next three or four months, Viper Recordings hooked me up with vocals by Shaz, so it was a bit of a procedure, but I always try to go with quality over quantity in my productions.
LessThan3: So why Seven Lions? Why not Six?
The name Seven Lions comes from a fantasy book called Latro In The Mist
by Gene Wolfe. I’m a big fantasy geek, or at least I used to be as it’s hard to find time to read anymore. Seven Lions is a character in the book, and I just really liked that name.
LessThan3: What software do you prefer to use?
Jeff: FL Studio 10
. I use Massive, Sylenth1, and Voxengo plugins. That’s basically my entire setup in a nutshell.
LessThan3: If you were in a rock band, what instrument would you play?
Jeff: Probably drums since I used to play as the drummer in a few punk and metal bands.
LessThan3: If the world were ending in LessThan3 minutes, and you had an iPod with every song ever made on it, what would you listen to?
LessThan3: Describe your sound in LessThan3 words.
Jeff: Melodic Heavy Progressive.
