Bristol’s DJ Die kicked off his new Gutterfunk imprint last year with a swaggering track from Mensah backed by Pulsar and DJ First Aid’s crunching Bombaclat. It may have taken six months to arrive, but their second release, including a track from Die himself, is finally here. Take it from us, it’s worth the wait.
Interface & Minus’ Hardwork mines the fertile ground between dubstep, jungle and juke, territory Addison Groove and the Planet Mu crowd have been exploring with success for the last few years. Hulking sub-bass thuds away beneath high-octane breakbeats and squeezed vocals. Die takes the reigns on Firing Line along with fellow Bristolian Mensah, and the result is taut, dark and heavy, an oscillating bass landscape strewn with decaying rave synths and sharpened claps.
After the slow start to their release schedule Gutterfunk are looking to pick up the pace through the second half of 2012, with the so far mysteriously anonymous Gutterfunk 003 and 004 currently being mastered with an eye to a Fall release. On the strength of their first two offerings, it is safe to say we are excited to see what Die & Co. have up their sleeves. Watch this space.
