Remember the name Hayden James, because if he releases more music like his self-titled EP, he’s going to be making waves for a long time. He first popped onto the radar a few months ago with the release of Permission To Love, a slow-burning, feel-good summer track that is an absolute dancefloor killer and entirely too infectious. One-part Balearic pop, the other a breezy indie slow jam, it quickly exploded to #1 on Hype Machine and garnered over 400K listens on SoundCloud after only two months. It’s the centerpiece of the 5-track EP, but rest assured, the other tracks are great too.
The self-titled EP isn’t made for dancing in the club, but the tracks are totally perfect for chilling out and relaxing; good headphones will go a long way here. Opening things up with the aptly named Beginnings, James introduces listeners to his wonderful melody work. His music has a little bit of everything—chillwave, pop, indie, soul, and even some trap for good measure. Lay Down, a stylish downtempo R&B song, is a literal treasure trove of sounds, taking the listener on a sultry and sexy journey. No Time features a sparkling synth line and a smoke-infused slow beat suited perfectly for a late-night rendezvous. Embrace closes out the EP in style, sending the listener on a dreamy and sweet journey.
