Guitar! is the latest distraction by Smule, a prolific interactive sonic application developer. They’re also the ones behind Sing!, I Am T-Pain, Magic Piano, Glee Karaoke, and more. Above all, they’re committed to social interactivity, so if you’re social and you like music, check it out–it’s free.
The app functions much like a game, incentivizing you to keep jamming. You’ll start off with a choice of Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle’s A Whole New World, Bruno Mars’ Grenade, or Jason Mraz’ I Won’t Give Up. The more you play, the more points you earn to buy new songs or upgrade your guitar from acoustic to electric.
There are three levels within each song choice. When you start a song, you’ll see colorful rolling notes indicating whether to pluck or strum. You do this by either tapping or sliding along a bar on the screen. And voila! You have sound.
The best thing about Guitar! is its sleek simplicity and intuitiveness. You don’t actually have to be a guitar hero to figure it out. With every new level, a quick tutorial shows you how to incorporate more challenging techniques.
If you’re not interested in learning other peoples’ songs, you can hit the “Freestyle” button to jam. The chord selection is basic and pleasant-sounding, so you can’t hit a wrong note. Bonus tip: shake your iPhone or iPad for some vibrato.
