Need a new warm-weather anthem? Detroit funkster GRiZ just dropped his latest single, Summer ’97, a smooth and silky groove that mirrors the title in falling in line with his golden age of hip hop-influenced production style.
Summer ’97 features samples from Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused, soul vocalist Ronald Isley, and Wax & EOM’s 2012 rap single Summer Breeze weaved between thick piano chords, Muzzy Bear’s funky guitar, and saxophones. According to GRiZ, he completed the song last August, but thought that “releasing a song titled ‘summer’ would have been possibly confusing.” It’s a jam that deserves to be played either on the souped-up sound system on a ’78 Cadillac Coupe de Ville or as it assuredly will be later this summer, onstage at the Red Rocks Amphitheater.
