The always-eccentric Grimes debuts her previously unheard track REALiTi from what she is calling “the lost album,” and pairs it with a YouTube video to match.
According to Grimes, REALiTi was to be included on her follow-up album to 2012’s Visions, but she scrapped the entire album after the poor reception of the album’s first single, Go. Now, we can get a little taste of what that album would have been like, as Grimes has released the tune as a way to give thanks to her fans in Asia.
“Since this is no longer gonna be on the album, I’m releasing it as a special thank you to everyone in Singapore, KL, Manila, Jakarta, HK, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo who came out to the shows! It was an honor to play with a bunch of amazing bands and travel to places I would never otherwise be able to go.”
She was also quick to comment on the quality of REALiTi:
“This song was never finished. Its a demo from ~ the lost album ~, recorded early 2013. I lost the ableton file, so it’s not mixed or mastered. I tried to doctor the mp3 into a listenable state, but it was poorly recorded in the first place and never meant to be heard by anyone, so its a bit of a mess.”
Despite that statement, it is a beautiful work altogether that carries with it the iconic dream-pop quality heard in her previous work.
Grimes gave the track away to all those who attended the shows on her last Asian tour. There is no word yet if she plans to make the single available as a global download, but you can view the whole video below and check out more at her website.
