Captivated By Gorgon City’s ‘Sirens’
Gorgon City feat. Maverick Sabre - Coming Home (Original Mix) [Virgin EMI]

Gorgon City feat. Annemarie - Elevate (Original Mix) [Virgin EMI]

As warm-toned, piano-driven house music continues to wash ashore in an expanding portion of the globe, London’s Matt “RackNRuin” Robson-Scott and Kye “Foamo” Gibbon of Gorgon City made their album debut with Sirens today, placing their keystone contribution in the bridge they helped build between the genre and its ever-growing amassment of supporters.

Sirens‘ beauty is simple, but only in the sense that the ingredients it comprises are few and quite familiar. Like a modern masterwork made in an age-old medium, “elegant” might illustrate better than “simple.”

We begin with Coming Home, the previously unheard hymn for a heartfelt homecoming featuring the soulful voice of Maverick Sabre over a thick slice of the duo’s bread-and-butter beat–no frills, just feels–sprinkled lightly with piano and gently modulated synth touches.

After the long-popular MNEK collab, Ready For Your Love, Katy B wooes over another island groove in Lover Like You, and Here For You caps off the album’s hopeless romantic chapter with Laura Welsh on the hat-happy house tune that begins our transition from the bedroom to the club. But before that,
FTPA steps back the house vibes and shakes loose the previous four from your ears with a shuffling slow jam beneath the voice of Swedish pop star Erik Hassle and a syrupy trumpet.

Go All Night brings back the club fodder with twice the fervor thanks to a bassy, splash-heavy piano beat and Jennifer Hudson’s heart-pumping vocals in one of the album’s greatest moments. Coming across established gems like this and Imagination between experiencing this wealth of new tunes for the first time serves as a reminder of the kind of banner year we saw from the relative newcomers Gorgon City. The LP finishes strong with 6AM, Elevate, and Take It All, which recall the work of British contemporaries Disclosure, rife with claps, punchy synth work and airy, sustained vocals. Maverick Sabre returns for a final ballad in Hard On Me to give Sam Smith some competition for British vocalist most sounding like a black R&B messiah circa 1975.

Sirens puts an exclamation point on Gorgon City’s wildly successful 2014, which saw the duo touch on a variety of modern approaches to house music–flirting with West coast/G house in heaters like Real and Imagination, taking it to Ibiza with Lover Like You and countless others–all executed with Gorgon City precision and finish.
