It didn’t take long for the UK’s Wilkinson to become a deeply ingrained name in the world of Drum & Bass. Back in January my pal Shmurkio took note of Wilkinson’s frequent appearances on Andy C’s legendary Nightlife Vol 5, and the hot young lad now seems to be ending the year on a similar note, with his most recent EP released on none other than RAM Records. Containing just three exquisite tracks, the release covers an impressive amount of musical ground, dabbling in different types of drum’n’bass.
A-side Tonight quickly introduces listeners to the likeness of liquid dnb with a fluid bass that begs to be surfed, and a vocal that hits an intensely high but embracing pitch. However, if you’re looking for a truly hypnotic bassline, you should check out the After Midnight Mix also included on the release. The EP’s B-side, titled Pistol Whip, carries a completely different feel, hitting you with some of the grittiest bass RAM Records has put out in 2011. There’s a dark, looming feel to the beginning, but when the track fully drops it’s just pure bonkers.
