Full disclosure: earbuds have never been my preferred way of listening to music on the go. I always felt that the white apple earbuds that came with iPhones were very uncomfortable and didn’t deliver the bass or sound quality I desired. I also tried a pair of in-ear headphones a couple years ago, but I later returned them after being dissatisfied with their performance. Suffice it to say, I was a bit skeptical when trying out the SOL REPUBLIC Relays, their latest brand of in-ear headphones. However, since SOL REPUBLIC’s other headphones have impressed me before, I knew I had to check the Relays out.
The first thing I noticed was that they included four different sizes of rubber padding. I tried different ones, and found a pair that fit my ears perfectly. After only a few minutes of wearing them, I barely noticed that I had them in.
The next trait I noticed was just how effective they are at canceling out all other sound around me. When you put these on, it becomes nothing but you and the music, as it should be. In regards to electronic music, the sound-cancelling feature made listening to my favorite radio shows and podcasts a far more immersive experience. They are a fantastic choice for those who ride the loud New York subways or the old Bay Area Rapid Transit system.
My foremost concern was how the sound quality would be, especially considering my previous experiences with other brands of in-ear headphones. To my delight, I was very impressed with the clarity of the sound coming out of the SOL REPUBLIC Relays. I tested them out while jogging and listening to a variety of EDM genres to make sure they were fit for a basshead like myself. While the bass levels were solid and did exceed my expectations, I would personally rather wear a pair of Tracks AIR wireless headphones around the home. However, for working out or going for a run, the SOL REPUBLIC Relays are ideal; a smart choice for active lifestyles.
Some bonus features include the fact they are water resistant, so you don’t have to worry about your gym-sweat ruining them. Additionally, they have a useful little clamp that you can use to stick them to your shirt. This prevents the wire from bouncing all over or get caught on something while you’re jogging or lifting weights. Lastly, at $79.99 these in-ear headphones are definitely affordable and competitively priced. My only gripe is that I wish the volume changer placed on the wire was a bit further down so it would still be easy to see with my eyes when looking down.To read more about their features or order a a pair, visit the SOL REPUBLIC Relays page at their online store.
