Goodbye, California. We’ll remember the lessons you taught us forever–never grow up, never grow old. Also never grow sober. It’s Friday Favorites 86.
Hip Hop | Nicki Minaj feat. Drake & Lil Wayne – Truffle Butter [Young Money]
Maya Jane Coles received some unexpected huge publicity when a leak of a new Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Lil Wayne track leaked that sampled her track What They Say. She also had some fantastic choice words for those who claimed she “sold out,” noting her hip hop roots and sincere flattery over some of the biggest names in the rap game wanting to use her beats. Rock on, Maya, and Nicki: here’s hoping The Pinkprint is a return to the Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape glory days, and not more of that Roman Reloaded pseudo-EDM Starships hogwash.
House | JackLNDN – Don’t Forget [Free Download]
The UK’s aptly named JackLNDN deals in feels from deep and soulful to bright and vocal. He returns to original productions with Don’t Forget, ending a long streak of remixes capped off with a premiere on LessThan3 in early November. LNDN takes a more deep-progressive approach to his latest with a pinch of disco and a pleasantly surprising wobble way off in the distance–delightfully original house music made by a promising talent. Pick it up for free here.
Techno | Butch & Hohberg – Rebirth (Original Mix) [Otherside]
Take a trip down the rabbit hole with this 10-minute masterpiece, courtesy of Butch and longtime studio partner Sebastian Hohberg. Dark and dynamic, the song slides through insectile pops and pulses, a driving kick drum, and oodles of other off-the-wall sounds. Heavy on atmosphere and exploration, there’s a reason this is one of John Digweed’s favorites. Pick it up on Beatport here.
House | Todd Terry – Hardhouse (Original Mix) [InHouse]
It’s that time of year when I’m reaching my “Ibiza-antipode”–as in my last trip to Ibiza is almost as far away as my next one. Still, at least there’s some good house music to keep the summer spirit alive, and what better way than with Todd Terry’s latest track, Hardhouse–straight off the Terrace at Space and out now on his own InHouse label. So whack the central heating to full, crack open a bottle of beer, and turn it up loud.
Indie/Beats | Kindness feat. Robyn – Who Do You Love (Jam City Remix)
With Kindness and Robyn teaming up for Who Do You Love, a track off the producer’s recent album Otherness, who better to offer a remix than UK producer Jam City? A member of the Night Slugs crew, Jam City gives Kindness’ original production a more minimal feel, featuring a pristine mix of digital bleeps and downtempo beats. The remix will be featured as part of the Who Do You Love remix EP being released Jan. 6 on Female Energy/Mom + Pop. The EP will also host remixes from Joakim and Jeremy Sylvester.
Indie/Beats | Tom Misch & Carmody – So Close [Beyond the Groove]
Tom Misch is undoubtedly one of my premier choices for emerging artists in 2015. So Close is the first single from his recent Out To Sea EP with Carmody, and just one listen is guaranteed to get you hooked. From the duo’s mesmerizing harmonies to the emotionally poignant lyrics and the meditative downtempo production, the entire EP is nothing short of pure magic. Purchase via iTunes here.
Pop/Dance | Cassian – Running (Plastic Plates Remix)
Following his wildly popular remixes of Katy Perry, Adele, Sia, and multiple originals, Plastic Plates returns with a remix of fellow Aussie contemporary Cassian’s Running. Leopold’s catchy lyrics pair perfectly with the bouncy bassline that Plastic Plates has laid as foundation. His knack for making any track insanely dancefloor-friendly is unparalleled and this remix is sure to start your weekend off on the right foot–then the left foot–until you find yourself in full-blown dance mode. The remix is available Dec. 19 via Sweat It Out.
House | Kalyde – This Joint
Kalyde‘s EP is pure underground goodness. It’s tagged as house, sounds a bit like deep house, and could probably pass as techno to some. Regardless of what it actually is, This Joint is smoking hot and packed with a sweet afterhours rhythm and groove.
