Yeah, it’s getting colder and darker earlier again. But all that really means is that you can give up on hiding your liquor in coffee and stuff a little earlier each day, right? Here’s to darkness. It’s Friday Favorites 81.
Trance | Faruk Sabanci – Ruya (Original Mix) [A State Of Trance]
Leave it to Faruk Sabanci to always come out with the heat. This track is pretty standard ASOT fare, similar in vein to productions from Mark Sixma, W&W, and Eximinds, but I simply cannot resist the breathtaking drops and orchestrations. Color me fanboy. Pick up Ruya here.
G House | Big Boi – Kryptonite (Dr. Fresch x Tendra Remix) [Free Download]
Wanted something gangster on a Friday, but couldn’t decide on the delivery. Dr. Fresch and Tendra made the decision easy by killing two beats with one tune in their collaborative remix of Big Boi’s Kryptonite, and I be on it. all. day. Pick it up here.
G House | Croatia Squad – Pop Your Pu**y (Original Mix) [Enormous Tunes]
Don’t let the name fool you–if you’re looking to kick off your weekend with something deep, dank, and undeniably groovy, then this is the track you need. Nu disco producer Croatia Squad combines dirty vocals with an even dirtier bassline, resulting in a jam so filthy you’ll need to take a shower afterwards. I think I played it about five times at our Halloween party last weekend, but no one seemed to mind. Pick it up on Beatport here.
Funk | Stevie Wonder – Superstition (C2C Remix) [Free Download]
My roommate played me this remix of Stevie Wonder’s classic track, Superstition, over the summer. I was skeptical before listening, as I always am with remixes that attempt to tackle great classic tracks from the ages. However, C2C were able to keep the genius of Stevie Wonder intact while adding their own funky flare. You can snag this remix for free from C2C’s Facebook page.
Trance | Onova – Platitude (Allen Watts Remix) [Monster Pure]
Onova’s 2007 release Platitude still ranks among my all-time favorite trance records. It’s about as uplifting and energetic as is possible for a piece of music to be, somehow managing to outdo itself at various points throughout the track. It would be hard to imagine squeezing even more energy out of it, but Allen Watts has managed just that, with a harder edge to boot. Stunning stuff out now on Monster Pure.
Indie/Beats | Ryan Weaver – OctaHate (Cashmere Cat Remix)
Indie breakout singer Ryan Weaver emerged onto the scene over the summer with her dreamy, polygon-inspired track OctaHate. It turns out the track was co-written by Charli XCX and co-produced by by Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos, Benny Blanco, and Cashmere Cat. Cashmere Cat has now released his own rendition of the track with an amplified, fragmented new twist. Cashmere Cat deconstructs the airy, fluid production of the original and adds a frantic mix of laser-beam synth and cracking beats.
Electro House | Calvin Harris feat. HAIM – Pray To God (Original Mix) [Sony]
The formula worked out pretty perfectly here–combine one of the world’s most dominant producers with one of the year’s biggest breakout groups and you get something fabulous. Bad-ass sister trio HAIM lent their stellar vocal power to phenom Calvin Harris for Pray To God, an energetic dance track with a magnetic beat and flashy synths. Grab the track and the rest of Calvin’s new album Motion on iTunes here.
Progressive House | MGMT – Electric Feel (DallasK Remix) [Free Download]
2014 has been a huge year for DallasK after taking over the Beatport #1 slot with fellow producer KSHMR on their single Burn and helping to teach Zac Efron how to DJ for the upcoming film We Are Your Friends. As a thank you to his fans, Dallas has released a free download of his remix of MGMT’s Electric Feel, a feel-good progressive house jam that is sure to make you smile. Head over to Dallas’ SoundCloud page to grab the free download.
Deep Progressive House | ZHU – Faded (SPADA Remix) [Ego]
ZHU’s Faded is no doubt one of the biggest tracks of the year. Its catchy lyrics are sure to get stuck in your head, and R&B fans are sure to love the sexy Lido remix. I’ve been falling in love this week with the SPADA remix that I heard on the Anjunadeep radio show. Rather than going for a funky vibes, the SPADA remix takes you through a whole new dimension with its hypnotic guitar melodies, atmospheric pads, and echo effects on the vocals. You can download SPADA’s official remix here on Beatport.
Nu Disco | Chris Malinchak – Happiness (Original Version)
I have always been a huge MNEK fan. He has the voice of a seductive angel, and it has been core to many electronic anthems this past year. When I saw that Chris Malinchak had released the original of Happiness, I think my own happiness spiked that afternoon. It is a lighter, simpler version of the release we are familiar with, but it keeps MNEK’s vocals as the focus and that is how it should be.
Deep House | Lane 8 – Without You [Anjunabeats]
Anjunadeep has got to be thrilled with the set of tunes that Lane 8 is about to release. Without You is a melodic piano track that is true to Lane 8’s smooth deep house sound. Set to be released with another groovy downtempo masterpiece in Diamonds, Without You can be picked up on Beatport Nov. 17.
