So turn off the lights, lock the door, check behind you, look under the bed, and behind the shower curtain, because we’re pretty sure we saw this pumpkin guy up here headed to your place looking for some sugar, baby.
Trance | Arnej vs 8 Wonders – Beginning Of The End (Original Mix) [A State Of Trance]
An underrated track from an underrated producer. Released in 2010, The Beginning Of The End by Arnej and his darker counterpart 8 Wonders is the perfect soundtrack for the trance tent of a post-apocalyptic zombie rave. Pick up the track here.
Electro House | James Egbert – Thriller [Free Download]
My all-time favorite Halloween track, from my all-time favorite pop star, gets the remix treatment from James Egbert, who (surprise!) also happens to be one of my favorite electro house producers. Featured on Whiiite’s Halloween Volume 3 package, James injects his own signature energy and wobbles while still keeping the original’s spooky vibe intact. Pick up the free download here
Midtempo | Figure feat. Bitter Stephens – Jason Is Dead (Original Mix) [Free Download]
Figure is the undisputed dark lord of movie monster bass music, and this slow-moving soul-eater was my favorite from the latest installment in his long-running tribute to terror, Monsters 5. Yes, he’s done this four other times, with gems like last year’s Child’s Play filling gaps along the way. Looking for excessively heavy Halloween tracks? He’s all you need to know. Catch him on the Terrorvision tour with Space Laces here.
Funk | Ray Parker Jr. – Ghostbusters (Kill Paris Remix) [Free Download]
Kill Paris ain’t afraid of no ghost! The talented producer tackled this remix last Halloween, and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since. Kill Paris always has a way of holding onto the melody of the track he’s remixing while still putting an awesome twist on it. This remix is no different. The track is bassy, funky, and fun. You can pick this remix up for free from Kill Paris’ SoundCloud here.
Trance | Brainbug – Nightmare (Sinister Strings Mix) [Positiva]|
It can be tricky to relate Halloween to dance music, with the majority of it being quite the opposite of sinister or spooky. Yet, 1997’s Nightmare by Italian producer Brainbug ticks all the boxes and was a bit of a hit in its day, reaching #11 in the UK charts–quite a feat for the time. Heavily featured in sets from the likes of Oakenfold in the latter part of the ’90s, Nightmare’s most famous version is appropriately the Sinister Strings Mix. Nostalgia has admittedly got the better of me–this isn’t as good as I remember it, but hey, it’s a classic, and those strings are certainly sinister.
Indie/Beats | Aphex Twin – Come To Daddy
Aphex Twin’s Come To Daddy is a fairly disturbing track on its own, but nothing compares to the utterly terrifying music video that goes with it. The video was supposedly shot in some of the same locations as Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, and features a gang of destructive, demonic children who all look like Richard D. James terrorizing an entire city. The track is a nightmare-inducing mix of electronic madness with what I’m assuming is one of the demon spawn howling, “I want your soul / I will eat your soul,” over and over again.
Electro House | The Bloody Beetroots feat. All Leather – Romborama (Original Mix) [Dim Mak]
The Bloody Beetroots possess a sound so dynamic it can take on just about any form, including a sinister one. With a fierce, pulsating beat, shrill percussion, and plenty of creepy vocal effects, Romborama is as spooky as they come. Grab the track on Beatport, and be sure you listen for the slow, looming piano chords at the end–they get me every time.
Trap | Yellow Claw & GRX & Cesqeaux – Psycho [Free Download]
In my opinion, Psycho by Yellow Claw, GRX, and Cesqeaux should have come out this month just in time for Halloween. Its haunting overtones, epic choir-sung build up, and famous samples from the classic horror film, Psycho, make it a real thriller. In case you didn’t know, GRX is an alias of Martin Garrix. It’s definitely one of the finest Dutch trap tunes to come out this year, and you can download it for free here.
Tech House | BONES – HALLOWEEN MIX 2014
If you live for grimy, warehouse-style tech house and happen to need a pump-up pregame playlist for tonight’s festivities, this mix by LA favorite BONES is the prime candidate. In true Halloween spirit, this set includes the deepest, dirtiest, and dopest underground jams that will have your head bobbing for the entire thirty minutes. Peep the full track list here.
