Instead of a moment of silence, let’s do the situation-appropriate thing and instead pause for a moment of unbridled madness in honor of one of the greatest weirdos of all time.
Feeling weird? Good. ‘Cause it’s Friday Favorites 69.
Indie/R&B | FKA twigs – Kicks [Young Turks]
FKA twigs has released her debut album, LP1, and given us a new baby-making soundtrack in the process. The album is full of ethereal, erotic R&B with ambient electronic influences. One of my favorites is final track Kicks, which features some Timbaland-esque stutter rhythms and some steamy, borderline NSFW lyrics to boot. Pick up LP1 here.
House | Herve x Zebra Katz – Tear The House Up (Jay Robinson Remix) [Mad Decent]
Welsch DJ/producer Jay Robinson steals the show with his contribution to the six-item Tear The House Up remix package, out now on Mad Decent. A heavily reverbed, organ-like lead synth recalls Disclosure’s smooth masterwork Confess To Me as it floats alongside Zebra Katz’ lovable retro verse for a criminally fun house number.
Funk/Electro | Tensnake & Jacques Lu Cont feat. Jamie Lidell – Feel Of Love (Boys Noize & Djedjotronic Remix)
The Tensnake remixes keep pouring in–thankfully, this week we were finally treated to one that gives the original mix a run for its money. Boys Noize and Djedjotronic whip up an old-school electro heater by chopping up the pieces of Feel Of Love, originally assembled by Tensnake with co-conspirators Jacques Lu Cont and Jamie Lidell, whose soulful crooning lends the track a funky human touch.
Future Bass | Route 94 – My Love (Prince Fox Mix) [Island]
We already showed some love for Oliver Nelson’s remix of Route 94’s house hit My Love, but Prince Fox has taken it to another level with this fresh future bass cut. Featuring spaced-out chords, chill trap vibes, and chopped-up vocals, the track has never sounded better. Pre-order the remix ahead of its Aug. 25 release on iTunes here.
Indie/Beats | Röyksopp & Robyn – A Monument To Everything (Kindness Remix feat. Busiswa)
Adam Bainbridge, better known as Kindness, recently announced the release of his sophomore album Otherness. Featured on the album is Swedish songstress Robyn. Bainbridge has returned the favor by collaborating with Robyn to remix Monument, a track off her recent EP with Norwegian duo Röyksopp. Kindness starts by stripping down the electro-pop duo’s original. He carefully removes select vocal parts from Robyn and swaps them with some from South African singer Busiswa. Kindness tops it all off with a groovy bassline and astral production that elevates the track to a new level of magnificence.
Indie Dance | Morgan Page – In The Air (Elkoe Remix) [Free Download]
First of all, a huge thank you to Elkoe for reminding me how much I loved (and clearly still love) Morgan Page, Sultan & Ned Shepard, and BT‘s In The Air. Furthermore, thank you for resurrecting it with a few extremely pleasant tweaks, taking it from the progressive category to indie dance territory–complete with all natural guitar chords and synths to create quite the aurally-pleasing melody. I’ve had this one on repeat since it came out just three days ago. If you’re on the same page, you can snatch your free download here.
House | Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs x Anna Lunoe – Feels Like (Original Mix) [Nice Age]
If you’re like me and think Anna Lunoe is the greatest thing since sliced bread, get ready to fawn over her new collaboration with British producer Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Marking TEED’s first original release in over a year, the track is a bass-heavy, sexy piece of club-ready music with a splash of UK garage sound that’s made even more intoxicating by vocals from both Anna and TEED. Grab it on iTunes here.
Progressive House | Pryda – Backdraft [Pryda]
While Eric Prydz produced more high-energy tracks last year, this summer he delivered the deep progressive sound that I enjoy most with his Pryda 028 EP. Originally, Mija was my favorite off the release, but this week I’ve been sucked into the hypnotic melodies of Backdraft. This track sets the perfect mood for those late drives back from the nightclub.
Progressive House | Watt (Original Mix) [Free Download]
This young producer caught my attention as the popular vote winner for the Pixie Lott remix contest and the most played remix for the Foster The People remix contest. However, it’s his original track Promises that I’ve had stuck in my head. Its beautiful story tells me Watt has a promising future ahead of him. You can pick it up for free here.
Trance | Andrew Bayer – The District (Original Mix) [Anjunabeats]
If you like big room trance mixed with techy builds and some huge atmospheric breaks, then you can’t go wrong with Andrew Bayer. The District is his latest release on his “home” label Anjunabeats, and it’s another standout anthem that presents the unusual-yet-familiar juxtaposition of some mental production techniques somehow working alongside truly beautiful musicianship. Grab it now on Beatport.
