Well you’re gettin’ old, you’re slightly grey,
and the kids don’t look at you the sa-a-ame.
So go back and dance with Maryjane,
’cause we don’t really feel your pa-a-ain.
That’s what we thought–now shut up. It’s Friday Favorites 67.
Trap/Jersey Club | Hoodboi feat. Destiny’s Child – Bug-A-Boo [Fool’s Gold]
This gem surfaced on the Fool’s Gold Draft Picks compilation that was released yesterday as a free BitTorrent bundle. Hoodboi is a newer LA producer, but with sounds like this, he’s sure to shine through the SoCal bass music pack. Pick up the whole BitTorrent bundle here.
R&B/Indie & Beats | Mr. Carmack – chill n with girlfriend
Mr. Carmack proved once again this week why he’s one of the most fun producers to follow on SoundCloud by unloading a sizable bundle of new treats. Chief among them is chill n with girlfriend, an expert flip of Dance With Me by 112. Such high-quality source material makes for a great starting point, for sure, and Carmack brings out all of the best elements of the original while injecting his own inimitably manic, groovy style into the mix.
House | Teamsports – Place Unknown (Original Mix)|
My main man Charlie Darker has tapped into the deeper–and definitively groovier–side of house music with his new side project, Teamsports. One track in particular that stands out is Place Unknown, recently featured on 3LAU’s Deep Haus podcast. Soft, slick, and spirited, the tightly produced tune makes for a tantalizingly exotic entry into the talented Torontonian’s catalogue. Grab your free download here.
Trance | Standerwick – Valyrian (Original Mix) [FSOE]|
Ian Standerwick, now just known as Standerwick, is something of a refreshing presence in the trance scene, and it’s not just because he can kick out a belting piece of 138 BPM trance. His latest release is Valyrian, an uplifting monster with a few quirky and bouncy riffs along the way. There is a subtle hint of big room around the four-minute mark, but if you’re going to mix trance and big room hooks, this is certainly the way to do it. Valyrian is out now on Future Sound Of Egypt.
Indie & Beats | William Arcane – Stay A While
Stay A While, the latest track from London producer William Arcane, is a track that I could hang out in all day. This comatose concoction is a masterful blend of hypnotic synth and emotionally-charged electronic beats. Arcane comes to us from Pictures Music, the same label responsible for the early work of producers like Koreless and Dark Sky, and has already earned praise from artists like Jamie xx and Bonobo. Hear what the hype is all about and download Stay A While over on iTunes here.
R&B/Soul | HONNE – Warm On A Cold Night [Super]
SOUL. SOUL. SOUL… Did I mention soul? Conveniently titled Warm On A Cold Night, this one truly feels like a musical blanket that will make your senses tingle in all the best ways. As HONNE’s debut single, it shows only the most promising trajectory for the London-based duo, and I can’t wait for what else is in store. The official release is set for September 1 via Super Recordings.
Indie & Beats | Gorillaz – Client Eastwood (Schmidt Remix) [Free Download]
Gorillaz are still one of my all-time favorite musical projects and their track Clint Eastwood is a personal favorite. The track has seen its fair share of remixes, but Bay Area producer Schmidt has put a new spin on it that separates it out from the others. Adding in a bouncy bassline and speeding things up a tad, Schmidt has created a mega dance floor-ready remix. He’s giving the track away for free so head over to his SoundCloud page to grab the download.
Future Trap | San Holo feat. The Nicholas – Hiding [Heroic]
I’m helplessly addicted to the upbeat sounds of future trap. It has such a refreshing taste to it, like a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice. This week I’ve been hooked on a new tune called Hiding by San Holo and The Nicholas that is featured on the new Filet Mignon Volume II mixtape. This is the kind of cheerful track that puts a smile on your face and a skip in your step. Download the compilation here.
Drum & Bass | Javeon – Intoxicated (TC Remix) [Virgin EMI]
TC, best known for rudebwoy basslines and unforgettably large drops, delivers something a bit smoother with his take on Javeon’s Intoxicated. TC transforms the original into an intelligent roller, leaving Javeon’s intoxicating vocal intact, while adding a scathing bassline and feverish break. Thankfully, TC also keeps the original’s emotive piano motif in his retooling, transplanting most of what made Javeon’s version so arresting. Still doing damage on the DJ circuit, TC’s remix of Intoxicated can be picked up on iTunes.
