Pop/Dance | Lady Gaga – Gypsy [Interscope]
Lady Gaga has once again proved that she is the queen of dance-pop with her new album, ARTPOP, which features production from EDM scene mainstays Zedd and Madeon. While I love most of the songs on the album, my favorite may be the Madeon-produced Gypsy, which features big room sounds tuned just right for mainstream appeal and spectacular vocals from Gaga. All Hail Mother Monster. Pick up ARTPOP here.
Nu Disco | Amtrac – Those Days (Viceroy Remix) [Free Download]
To counter the onsetting winter, I’ve had radiant house and disco on blast, and this classic’s ready for toasting marshmallows. Pick it up here, a gift from the prince of the pool himself, Viceroy.
Bass | Scatman John – Scatman (Au5, Savant, Fractal and Prismatic REMIX) [Free Download]
You’ve definitely heard the original before, but I can guarantee that you’ve never heard it sound anything like this. This dubstep/trap/bass remix provides a very welcome tribute to the former scat singer, who unbeknownst to me, passed away in 1999. If the scatman can do it, so can you. Ski bi di bi di do bap do do bam do bada bwi ba ba bada bo. Free download here.
Glitch Hop | Drake – Hold On We’re Going Home (K Theory Remix) [Free Download]
Drake’s Hold On We’re Going Home is one of my favorite tracks of the year, and it’s no surprise that the track has seen a ton of great remixes. Time to add another to the list with San Francisco trio K Theory’s glitchy, bass-heavy remix. Grab a free download of the remix on their SoundCloud.
Deep House | Lonely Boy – Something Else [Culprit]
I’ve been sitting at work all week wishing I was somewhere else, but Lonely Boy and the new Culprit various artists compilation Above The City 3 helped me make it to Friday. Check out Above The City 1 and 2, and be sure to pick up Volume 3, out on Culprit LA Nov. 20.
Dubstep | Death Grips – You Might Think He Loves You For Your Money But I Know What He Really Loves You For It’s Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat (Original Mix)
Death Grips, the hybrid hip-hop/punk/noise/WTF group out of Northern Cali released a free album of scratchy, in-your-face tunes this week entitled Government Plates. The opening track is as obnoxiously titled as it is psychotic: You might think he loves you for your money but I know what he really loves you for it’s your brand new leopard skin pillbox hat. It comes with an equally disturbing video. Go download the album and lose your mind.
Tech House | Jay Lumen – Nobody (Original Mix) [Off]
Bouncy, funky, sexy tech house–Jay Lumen’s latest track, Nobody, certainly ticks all of the boxes. The bassline drives the track and is one of those classic little riffs that just sets a dancefloor on fire. I was going to insert a terrible pun about being “nobody” if you don’t like Nobody, but I’ll leave it. Just be assured that it’s a belter and is currently playing at your local nightclub, assuming you live near an awesome nightclub. If not, it’s out now on Off Records and still sounds great on a pair of headphones.
House/Tech House | Shit Robot – We Got A Love feat. Reggie Watts (Paul Woolford Remix) [DFA Records]
Shit Robot’s piano-driven house tune We Got A Love was recently given a gut-busting tech makeover by Paul Woolford, and I’ve been pairing it with my morning coffee this week to great effect. I’ve long dreamed of the day when Reggie Watts would lend his angelic voice to, well, an actual song (as opposed to the beat-boxing, live-looping mayhem of his surreal, improvisational music/comedy). This one’s sure to tide you over until the next episode of Comedy Bang Bang, at least. The We Got A Love remix pack is out now.
Deep House | TCTS feat. Shivum Sharma – These Heights (Original Mix) [Greco-Roman]
Only a few days since the release of his first EP, Sam O’Neill is taking the electronic music world by storm as TCTS. The irresistibly catchy and soothing vocals from Shivum Sharma complete the deeply enchanting These Heights. Also the title of the EP, These Heights is just a taste of what O’Neill has prepared for us. Just released on Greco-Roman, be sure to grab the entire thing here.
