July 4 falls on a Saturday this year, which means we get an extra day with which to enjoy some of the US’ most successful domestic products: industrialized beef and high fructose corn syrup. Mmm, yeah. Oh, and dance music. Thanks Founding Fathers! It’s a very independent Friday Favorites 115.
Jungle Terror | Mike Cervello & Stoltenhoff – Uzumaki (Original Mix) [Barong Family]
I played this track in my set for SF Pride last weekend (listen here) and it set the crowd off something fierce. Uzumaki is part of a four-track free EP from Mike Cervello which also contains a collaboration with Cesqeaux. Download it here.
Bass | Seek N Destroy x ICHI – Maidan (Original Mix) [Kannibalen]
A personal favorite, ICHI, joins forces with Australia’s Seek N Destroy for Maidan, a cinematic beatdown of a trap-dubstep hybrid. Arpeggiated builds even add a hint of trance and combine with tribal chanting for an engrossing larger-than-life feel. Other than that, it’s violent, it’s depraved, and it’s unapologetic–just the way Kannibalen does things. Pick it up here.
Trap | T-Mass feat. Jack U, Justin Bieber, Porter Robinson, deadmau5 & Kaskade – Language For Now [Free Download]
I’m usually not a fan of mashups, but my jaw hit the floor after tasting this concoction from T-Mass. In the crockpot, we have Porter Robinson’s Language, deadmau5 and Kaskade’s classic hit Move For Me, Jack U’s Justin Bieber collab Where Are U Now, and a dash of melodic trap for seasoning. The result is a five-star musical meal that makes for the perfect party tune. Grab the free download here.
Techno | Adam Beyer – The Crossing (Original Mix) [Toolroom]
It’s tough to pick a favourite from Toolroom’s Ibiza Underground 2015 compilation, but the opener from Adam Beyer is a good start. The Crossing is a fine example of the techno flavor the label is pushing at the moment, and it should go down a storm during Adam’s innumerable sets on Ibiza itself this summer, with gigs at various spots ranging from Sankeys to Space and Sven Vath’s Cocoon parties at Amnesia. The Crossing is available as part of the full Ibiza Underground album, which you can grab here.
Indie/Beats | Cleopold – Down In Flames (Original Mix) [Detail Co.]
Released on Chet Faker’s label Detail Co., Melbourne artist Cleopold’s new tune Down In Flames is a sexy cut that will have you swaying until the sun sets. Produced by Bag Raiders and featuring Cleopold’s smooth vocals, the tune keeps a light hi-hat rhythm at its forefront and progresses with jazzy guitar riffs for added swagger. His past work includes lending his vocals to both Miami Horror and Cassian’s tracks, but he’ll be switching gears to focus on his solo venture and upcoming album. For more tunes from Cleopold, head to his SoundCloud here.
House | Joris Voorn – Sweets For Piano (Boyfriend Remix) [Free Download]
A moombahton OG with a wild flair for the funky and progressive, Lithuania’s Boyfriend has excelled over the past half-decade at sharing an ability similar to Jamie xx
in recalling that which we adore about classic house music. He blends these motifs with tropical and sometimes folky influences to place a personal stamp on his inventive productions. Dutch deep techno producer Joris Voorn’s
cool, ambient, and steel pan-aided 2014 release Sweets For Piano is re-imagined as a thumping and swirling house heater, with the steel pan now being a key piece of Boyfriend’s unique and magical-feeling flip. Grab this one for free here.
Progressive House | Vicetone ft. Kat Nestel – Nothing Stopping Me (Original Mix)
I first heard (and fell in love with) Vicetone when they dropped Heartbeat in 2013, and I have been following them ever since. The feel-good vibes in their latest has me pressing replay, and it will definitely be on my holiday weekend playlist. When I interviewed them at TomorrowWorld last year, Ruben alluded to an unreleased song being his favorite. I wonder if this was it? Be sure to check out more of their stuff on SoundCloud.
Tech House | Jaded – She Likes It [Black Butter]
She Likes It by Jaded is dark, catchy, and packs a mean attitude. It runs with a hypnotic rhythm, and the aggressive voice sample that says “she likes it rough” is sure to tap into the carnal urges of even the most stubborn dancefloors. I’ve been hooked on these beats all week long. You can get the full Big Round & Juicy EP here on Beatport.
