After receiving high praise for last year’s Firethorn/Pandorum on RAM sister-label Program, drum & bass producer Frankee has just delivered a follow-up in the form of a double A-sided EP called Black Heart/Wonderland. The new EP represents Frankee’s debut on RAM Records, with the Londoner recently inking an exclusive deal with the genre-leading imprint. The young producer’s undeniable talent transcends his years, evidenced in his ability to marry the classic and contemporary complexion of D&B on his new EP.
The EP kicks off with Black Heart–a tune birthed from the obscure underbelly of the 170bpm genre. Anchored in the sub-frequencies, Black Heart is the epitome of darkness with its combustible bass motif, jarring chorus sample, and measured rhythm. For something a few shades lighter than Black Heart, jump ahead to Wonderland to revisit the sound of D&B from years past. Wonderland’s hovering bassline makes the perfect backdrop for its ubiquitous jungle break and soulful vocal sample. Nuanced with subtle musical devices throughout, the track’s piano breakdown is surprisingly interesting, offering a quick, yet highly gratifying prelude to Wonderland’s several drops. Make sure to head over to Beatport to pick up both tracks from Frankee’s debut EP on RAM.
