Known to his friends as Matt Price, Foreign Concept has undoubtedly stirred the cauldron of breaks and bass since his debut back in 2009. Whether it be his occasional guest mixes on Rinse FM or Critical Music podcasts, the Londoner is always locked and loaded with plenty of neuro-munitions. Those unfamiliar with his brand of tech-funk need only sample his latest sizzling EP to get a sense of his unique style. Appropriately entitled Tag Team, the EP features several collaborators including T Man, Stray, and eMC lyricist Punchline, and comes by way of Kasra’s Critical Music imprint.
Tag Team is a four-track brew of taut beats and menacing lyrical flows, as evidenced by FC’s collaboration with Stray called Bang It. Bang It starts on a relaxed note, with a harmonic pad phrase akin to ’90s D&B classics like Soul Beat Runner or Terminator, but quickly transforms into a hard-stepping, bass workout. Halfway through the tune, the two producers unveil a throbbing bassline and a deluge of kinetic hi-hats, bringing Bang It to a sweat-inducing boil. With its staggered drum pattern and aggressive vibe, this tune is certain to keep the mercury rising for the rest of the hot season.
For a splash of hip-hop with a D&B twist, the EP’s title-track and Paper Cha$er deliver a double-shot of rude-boy flavor. T Man supplies fiery-hot lyrics over a cocktail of diving bass and breakbeats on Tag Team, while Punchline spits three nasty verses of clever metaphors over a half-time rhythm on Paper Cha$er. Foreign Concept delivers the perfect canvas of bleeding edge beats for these two very different MCs to shine.
