If I told you there was a duo out there producing tracks that sounded a bit like Daft Punk with only 400 fans on Facebook, would you believe me? Yeah, I probably wouldn’t believe it either if I were you. Imagine my surprise, then, when I discovered FireFlowerz, composed of two 21-year olds from Italy. Freon (Luca D’Angelo) and Yoru (Matteo Soru) have been collaborating since 2007, initially producing fidget house before progressing into dubstep, drum’n’bass, French house and even disco, all while maintaining a markedly funky vibe in their tracks. Their most recent EP, Fitness, was released on Cheap Thrills back in June and most definitely slipped under all of our radars. Time to fix that.
Starting off with Fitness, you’ll find yourself immediately feeling that French house-inspired groove. It’s got a bit of a Digitalism feel mixed in there as well, in addition to some well done fidgety vocals that pretty much make the track what it is. You could almost stick this track into Daft Punk’s Discovery album and I doubt anyone would really notice that anything was out of place. The duo definitely switches things up with I Need Your LV, which speaks to the hip hop sensibilities these two have, but with a twist that you’ll find right around the 1:55 mark. The third track I want to draw attention to is Lighters, which is a lovechild of the French sound and Chromeo’s chilled disco vibe. Definitely a unique gem for your collections.
