Merissa Campbell had a head start. Growing up in London with two musician parents who recorded in their own studio meant that she could DJ by the time she was seven. By the time she left school she was teaching music technology to grown men, and for a time was even rapping for producer Fingaprint. Now it’s 2011 and she’s taking the world by storm as Cooly G, blessing us with the broken, astro-garage of Landscapes and It’s Serious on her third release for Kode9’s titanic Hyperdub imprint.
A-side Landscapes is as slow a release as we’ve heard from Cooly G thus far–a seven-minute feast of Merissa’s own sultry crooning and gently unfurling drum programming. It’s Serious is definitely more dynamic, but while the clattering rhythms may be more immediate, it’s still not exactly a bruiser. What makes it so effective and unique is how sexy Cooly G makes it all sound; with a few plush chords and a strategically placed sax, she imbues the track with a sensual vibe all her own. Her first full-length is imminent on Hyperdub. Brace yourselves; it looks like it might be a classic.
