Blu Mar Ten has certainly earned their stripes in eyes of drum’n’bass generals like DJ Marky, Ed Rush, and Marcus Intalex; these prolific DJs have been spinning Blu Mar’s tunes since the ’90s! After a lengthy foray into other genres like ambient and downtempo, they have re-emerged in 2011 to release another drum’n’bass masterpiece entitled Love Is the Devil.
The Love Is the Devil LP is quite astounding considering the scope of the album. It features eighteen tracks of some of the most delicately crafted soundscapes, grimiest basslines, and exhaustive drum programming ever produced by Blu Mar. They have certainly raised the bar with this album as it spans almost every sub-genre of drum’n’bass. From liquid to neurofunk, there is something for everyone on this long-play.
Love Is the Devil kicks off with Into the Light, a liquid roller that is worth the price of the whole album alone. The swooshing cymbal crashes and angelic pads dance around in the background of the track, while the growling bassline is upfront and heavy. The tune secedes into a barely-intelligible vocal that injects just the right amount of soul at just the right time. Brilliant! Other standout tunes on the album are the dark and dirty Problem Child and the neurofunky Damage. These two tunes might sound like they could have come out of the Virus Recordings camp, but the entire album was released on Blu Mar Ten’s own recently established imprint. Love is the Devil is certainly a fantastic way to inaugurate their new label!
