Since they burst onto the scene back in 2005, Jas Ford and James Shaw have been making waves as Simian Mobile Disco. The release of their third studio album, Unpatterns, sees them extending themselves in new directions. If you listen to this album, and then go back and listen to their first album Attack Decay Sustain Release, you’ll see not only how far their sound has come. One listen through this album and you’ll agree, this one’s gonna be a chart topper (and it’s ripe for remixing too).
Released as Unpatterns’ lead single, Seraphim (official video below) is sure to open your ears. Right off the bat, the beat is captivating, the vocals mystifying, and the disco true to form. With A Species Out Of Control, we’re brought into a landscape of a thumping bassdrum and a funky beat. My favorite track has to be Interference; it’s techy, deep, and dark.
All in all, I give this album four stars out of five; the range of sound that Simian Mobile Disco has certainly impressed me.
