When the clock struck 11 on the second night of Insomniac’s flagship festival, the magical Kinetic Field owl spread its wings to welcome Eric Prydz to EDC Las Vegas for the very first time while a dark remix of Personal Jesus sent 40,000 “headliners” into a frenzy. Halfway through the opening track, fireworks and flamethrowers lit up the night sky, signaling the beginning of an an hour long journey of hypnotic, tantalizing Pryda music.
Though a fear of flying had kept the Prydz (also known as Cirez D and Pryda) off American shores since 2008, he dared a transatlantic flight last year to join Identity Festival’s summer tour. Since then, headlining America’s biggest festivals has become something of a regularity for the chart-topping Swedish DJ: he performed at this year’s Ultra Music Festival as both Eric Prydz and his dark techno alter ego, Cirez D, followed by Coachella appearances a month later when he closed out the Sahara tent both weekends.
The Kinetic Field took a darker, more exotic tone with Pryda at the helm, a refreshing change on a stage where popular and overplayed dance tracks had become the mainstay. Fan favorites like Every Day and Allein were mixed with newer releases Power Drive and Rotonda. The Swede also showcased the talent on his Pryda label, dropping Jeremy Olander’s infectious Let Me Feel half way through into his gig. Lengthy buildups and explosive drops, a trademark of the Pryda brand, were greatly amplified by Insomniac’s massive pyrotechnic displays.
Eric Prydz’s performance on EDC’s colossal Kinetic Field was nothing short of masterful as the underground atmosphere dazzled thousands on North America’s greatest electronic playground. Be on the lookout for Prydz and protege Jeremy Olander as they come to a town near you, and be sure to follow Eric on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with quality releases.
