Call it what you want, electro trance, trouse…whatever. The shift has been cemented by leading figures in the trance world, including Above & Beyond, the poster boys of uplifting trance. Anjunabeats Vol. 9 was noticeably housier than previous volumes, with a heavy emphasis on “electro” synths in the basslines. Now, another UK trance figurehead is emerging from the fold with a new single that’s keeping with the trend.
Gareth Emery’s newest project Tokyo is quite a departure from his more demure style. Deeply infused with dubby electro grooves, this is a track bound to split some Gareth fans. However, given the track’s current #4 ranking on the Beatport Top 10, I’m going to assume that there are more than just a few people supporting the track. With the spliced female vocals bundled together with a catchy melody, Tokyo reminds me of a cross between Super8 & Tab and Arty. Is this the start of a new Gareth Emery sound? Coming off a major artist album release, it makes sense that Emery is experimenting with different styles right about now as a part of his artistic evolution.
