Like Argentinian trance stars Heatbeat, Santiago Niño is a part of a fresh line of dance talent from the southern hemisphere. Born in Colombia and currently living in Guatemala, Niño began producing at the age of sixteen, experimenting with everything from hard techno to progressive trance.
Straight from his recent EP From Scratch, City Lights and Malayan are richly-crafted tracks to say the least. All of the sounds Niño employs, from the melodic synths to the beats themselves, sound fresh and original; the rhythmic pattern in City Lights even draws influence from the breaks genre, which is not something you hear often in a progressive tune. Anyone seeking an escape from the over-saturated world of generic progressive house and trance would definitely appreciate Niño’s work. If I had to compare his innovative style of production to other artists, he would perhaps be be best associated with Japanese artists like Tasadi and Nhato.
