This release has been a long time coming. The dubplate version of Acid Reign that makes up the first half of this 12″ was in many eyes the standout track of Pinch’s (pictured) FabricLive mix in January of 2012, and fans have been clamouring for an official release ever since. It finally finds its way into circulation on his buddy Photek’s label, and is appropriately accompanied on the flip by arguably the duo’s best offering since their last outing on Tectonic last July. In keeping with the dark and dangerous TB-303 flavour of Acid Reign, M25FM comes complete with dismal atmospheres and lashings of acidic goodness.
Acid Reign has always been a belter of a track. Broken rhythms and soul-crushing bass rolls provide the anchor for a caustic synth melody that slithers in and out of the mix, the dread vibes heightened by squeezed, spectral vocals. The pair sets out to push many of the same buttons on M25FM, switching machinoid off-kilter percussion for a subterranean acid house pulse, those signature 303 stabs burning through the haze as they wriggle and mutate. Pretty stellar stuff, and nigh on essential for those who missed Acid Reign on the first round.
