Techno DJ Dubfire, one half of legendary duo Deep Dish, paid a little visit to New York, and LessThan3 was happy to be present. Popular events company Flawless brought the Iranian-American north from his DC home as a part of their Verboten series, and the turn-out was a group of people excited to see Ali, chanting him by his real name several times. I was unfamiliar with his music before that night, but his darker, more pointed breed of techno was something I really enjoyed, as did fellow attendee Shmurkio. Another thing I can definitely remark on was his impressive dual laptop Traktor/Ableton set-up.
Another part of the evening that impressed me was the venue. Good Units is a basketball court-turned-party space right under the Hudson Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Its central but discreet location was perfect for the vibe. We had to go down many stairways and passageways to get to it, so you in no way felt like you were in a massive throng of people moving in and out of the exit. I would highly recommend hitting up any party that you can in this space just to have a peek at it–I think it is going to be the jump-off point of many great dance music shows to come.
