Andrew Bayer’s sophomore album is now just a few weeks away and promises to be a masterpiece of electronic music. This seems like a bold claim to make before anyone has heard the finished product, but if Anjunabeats’ latest release is anything to go by, it’s a claim worth making. Lose Sight is the lead single from If It Were You We’d Never Leave, and once again it’s a prime example of Andrew Bayer’s diverse style.
It’s a tough one to categorize; most download stores have opted for the catch-all term “electronica”, but in reality it’s a mix of influences and elements that span the musical spectrum. From the acoustic guitar lick to the sampled vocals of Ane Brun and the beautiful piano line, this isn’t a simple mashing of loops – it’s a palette of musical ideas that evolves and progresses. The mixing adds to the atmosphere with crackles that give the feel of vinyl samples and the bridge features an utterly beautiful example of what can be achieved with reverb. It’s reminiscent of Aphex Twin, and although Bayer hasn’t yet achieved the same legendary status, it’s clear he’s well on his way.
